Product Description

Our microclover can help you have a green lawn in every meaning of the word.  Adding clover to your lawn will keep it greener during the summer with less water than your neighbors use, reduce fertilizer use, and eliminate the need for chemical weed killers because over time the clover will thicken up and crowd out weeds like dandelions.

 How does Microclover Prevent Weeds?

You've heard that you should mow your grass tall to prevent weeds right?  One of the reasons that works is because the taller your grass is, the more it shades the soil.  If the soil is shaded, weed seeds have difficulty getting the sunlight they need to get established.  Well, what do you think is better at shading the soil - a skinny vertical blade of grass or a nice umbrella like clover leaf?  You guessed it, the clover leaf.  As a bonus, if you have microclover in your lawn, you can keep it a little bit shorter and still get excellent weed suppression.  Visit whygoodnature.com/microclover for more information.

Overseeding Your Lawn with Microclover:

Our microclover has a special coating that helps it get established and providing nitrogen to fertilize your lawn 6 - 9 months sooner than clover that isn't coated and inoculated with our special seed starter.

Broadcasting microclover works much better than broadcasting regular grass seed.  Start by determining the square footage of the area you have to cover (www.findlotsize.com or just measure it out).  1 lb. of our microclover will cover 600 square feet.  If you'd like to see the clover establish more quickly you can spread it twice as heavy so that 1lb only covers 300 square feet.  Set your spreader on the lowest setting and cover the lawn once.  Repeat until you've spread the desired amount of seed.

Starting a New Lawn with Microclover:

We don't recommend seeding microclover alone, it's best used along with grass.  If you're seeding a lawn from scratch (there is no grass there) we recommend seeding it along with our Tuff Turf for a low maintenance and attractive lawn.  You can seed the lawn normally with Tuff Turf at 10 lbs. / 1000 s.f. and then spread the microclover separately at 2 lbs. / 1000 s.f.

Will it work in my area?

If they do see regular clover growing then the microclover should work. Also you can tell people that we have sold the microclover to people all over the country (California, Florida, Texas, and NY) and in Canada and it seems to perform in all these climates.

Does it flower?

It flowers a lot less than Dutch White Clover. It does flower a little more in its second year, but overall it probably flowers about 90% less than regular white clover.

How big is it and/or how tall does it get?

It is really about the size of white clover, but smaller than red hop clover. It can get about 6 to 8 inches tall on its own. In a lawn it gets mowed down, but if it is just microclover it can get a little taller.

Can I just plant microclover without grass?

The short answer is yes. We originally did not recommend this but some clients have done this with success. One I know of in New York and one in California. In general we suggest mixing it with grass for best results because the clover will recede over the winter and you might have mud.

Do you need to fertilize microclover?

Not really. It is mostly self-fertilizing. We do recommend fertilizing your lawn if it is mixed in with microclover to help the grass stay competitive with the microclover.

How do I prep the soil?

If you have grass already mow it real short and scratch the area up some ( not too much is needed) Broadcast the seed  ( NOTE : THE SEED IS TEENY TINY AND IS PROBABLY BEST SPREAD BY HAND OR BY PUTTING YOUR SPREADER ON ITS SMALLEST OPENING)

The seed needs daily (or twice daily if real hot and dry) watering. Compost or straw is OK - but typically not necessary for the seed to germinate.

How long does the seed last?

If kept dry the seed will last past the sell by date. This is on the label and usually 12 to 18 months after tested.

Will the microclover takeover my lawn?

The microclover in general is more aggressive than grass and we therefore recommend still doing some fertilizer to help the grass stay competitive.

  1. Great product, green yard even in August. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 16th Apr 2018

I'm so pleased with the seeds. We have a very shady yard in CT that had been neglected for years. It was either patchy sparse grass or moss -- the moss I like and encourage. I spread the seed over everything and the next summer the yard stayed much greener. My goal is all clover, moss, and whatever else naturally grows, no grass that I have to mow!

  3. Terrific Product 5 Star Review

Posted by on 23rd May 2016

We lost our lawn, entirely, during the last CA drought. Since I could not bring myself to embrace a complete xeriscape plan I wanted to try micro-clover. It requires less water. We are more than pleased. It came up thick and beautiful and continues to get thicker. We just reseeded some bare areas that the birds feasted on the first time around. This time we used a water scarecrow to keep the birds away. It's coming up beautifully.

  4. Microclover grows fast and looks great! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Sep 2014

I got rid of my backyard lawn completely and planted 100% microclover. I saw sprouts starting in just 3 days! It took about 5 weeks to fill in completely and the tallest clover is about 6". I'm so happy with it that I'm replacing my front lawn next.

  5. Best little clover coverage possible! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Jul 2014

It is early days yet to say that the "whole" garden is covered as I only started mixing microclover and grass 40 days ago for seeding. But it came up really fast, and it looks so adorable....Reason I got into microclover is to have a lower maintenance and hardy garden that can withstand heavy dog traffic. I noticed that all the parks here in Fairfield County CT have a mix of clovers and grass and they all seem to be dog resistant. So hopefully mine will be too. Service was excellent, mailing very fast. Will keep y'all updated on how things progress

  6. Microclover is awesome! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Jul 2014

I over seeded with microclover this spring, it is now July 20 2014 and all I can say is wow! it came up right away and grows everywhere grass didn't before. I mowed yesterday and I couldn't find one broadleaf weed in the entire lawn, and I have not used any chemicals!! The lawn is always green and I mow less then before the clover was planted. Why didn't I know of this sooner? Thanks!

  7. Meadow like front yard 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th May 2014

I wanted for years to encourage a meadow like front yard. I do not like the idea of my grandchildren playing on a chemically treated yard. I also believe that we need to preserve water.
The microclover seems to be the answer. I overseeded some areas and directly seeded some blank spots.
    The result is outstanding.
Next will be my completing the entire front yard and considering the back yard.

  8. Best thing I ever did with my lawn - great results! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 22nd Apr 2014

Our soil is sandy, and we have lots of huge Oak Trees that make a lot of shade. And 2 dogs. Every year no matter how much over-seeding, watering and fertilizing we did, the lawn was very thin, with bare spots and mold, and weeds. I was looking for a grass alternative and read about micro-clover. We overseeded with it last year and were amazed at how fast it sprouted, 4-5 days, how green it was and stayed, and how it actually rejuvenated the grass that we had. This year our snow has only been melted for 2 weeks, and already our lawn is green and coming up beautifully. Most of our neighbors are full of mold, bare spots and brown - like ours used to be. Highly recommend and can't wait for a few more weeks to see the full effects of our 2nd season with micro clover!

  9. Greened up my lawn and stoppped the weeds 5 Star Review

Posted by on 25th Feb 2014

This is my second purchase of Microclover. Since seeding with it over a year ago, my lawn is thicker, greener, and now has very few weeds. Microclover gave me a great looking sustainable lawn without the use of expensive and dangerous chemicals.

  10. Microclover is a great solution to overfertilization and chemicals! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Oct 2013

My first "crop" of microclover in the front yard is sprouting nicely. There is grass and other green ground cover there, too. I am anxious to see it next summer and show my neighbors how unnecessary and damaging to the environment thick grass lawns really are. I have purchased 10 lbs more for the rest of my yard.
