What is Annual Bluegrass?

Annual Bluegrass is a weedy grass that looks a little yellow and has white seed heads in the spring. It is a species of Bluegrass that does not tolerate hot weather.  It grows well in the spring, produces a lot of seeds, dies in the summer, then sprouts again from seed so that it can return next spring.

Why do you have Annual Bluegrass?

Annual Bluegrass likes to sprout in bare areas, especially along driveways and walks. If those areas are damaged with snow plows, cars, or improper string trimmer edging then you’ll end up getting annual bluegrass in them. It will also sprout in any bare areas of the lawn.

What can be done about Annual Bluegrass?

There’s not much that can be done about the annual bluegrass that you currently have.  It will die naturally when the weather gets warm. To prevent it in the future, we recommend:

• Seed any bare spots in the fall
• Mow your lawn high to shage the soil surface and prevent weed seeds from germinating
• Super Seed your lawn in the fall to thicken your lawn to help prevent weeds...a thick healthy lawn is the best defense against weeds
• Don’t water more than ever 3 to 4 days...watering daily will help weeds sprout
